I'll be honest right off the bat: I adore Peter Robinson's writing. I've read (and enjoyed) all of his books, and when I heard about STRANGE AFFAIR, I rushed to pre-order it. I waited anxiously for it to be delivered, and when I finally got it into my impatient little hands, I devoured the book.
This latest in the Inspector Banks series finds Alan Banks living in a rented flat, trying to put his life back together. He gets a frantic phone message from his brother who asks for his help, mentioning that it could be a matter of life and death. Banks decides to head to London to find his brother after he's unable to reach him by phone. Meanwhile, a young woman is found dead in her car, and when the police investigate, they find Banks' name and address in her pocket. Is there a connection?
While reading, I alternated between wanting to rush through because the story was just that good, and wanting to read slowly, taking every word in, because the writing was just that good. The plot, sense of place, characters, and atmosphere were all fantastic. I just can't say enough about this book.
I saw Peter read from this in Toronto. I'm really looking forward to it. If only I could get this damn pile whittled down....
